This past Wednesday, March 22, Wesson Williams was walking his 15-year-old poodle, Taffy, in the neighborhood ofPort Richey, Florida, when the completely unthinkable happened.

“I was out in the yard with him,” said the 78-year-old Wesson. “I turned my back for one minute and then he disappeared.”

Taffy was nowhere to be found.

Soon enough, he thought he heard barks but they were coming from underground.

Wesson immediately called the police. Officers, the fire department, and public works and utilities crews arrived to stage an incredible rescue.

The amount of support surprised Wesson.

The crews spent two hours digging into the ground, where it was discovered that Taffy had wandered into a culvert underneath a driveway.

The poor pup had gotten stuck inside, tangled in roots and dirt. It made matters worse that Taffy is deaf.

After exposing the earth, the crewmen finally noticed the bright orange sweater that belonged to the poodle, and asked “Is he OK?”

They were able to free him after tugging at the dirt around him, and luckily, the pup was unharmed. When he was handed back to the awaiting arms of Wesson, he quickly nuzzled up to his owner’s beard. The heroes around him broke into applause.

Wesson said that later that same day Taffy was back to his regular, happy self.
