A generous mystery man paid off nearly $50,000 worth of layaway at a Walmart in Pennsylvania, sending a woman named “Santa” to deliver the check, local media reported on Thursday.
The check paid off all debts for 194 accounts at the Walmart in Everett, the Bedford County Free Press reported.
“When customers quietly pay off others’ layaway items, we’re reminded how good people can be,” the company told CNBC.
Walmart told the Free Press a woman walked into the store last Wednesday, saying her name was “Santa B.” Then she reportedly handed over a cashier’s check totaling $46,265.59.
Officials did not name the donor but said the person who signed the check was a male.
It’s the third straight year that a Walmart in Pennsylvania had its layaway accounts paid off — and it was the largest single donation any store has received this year, CNBC added.
One shopper said her family was extremely grateful for the donation. Sandy Terry told the network she had still owed $75 for an Xbox she bought her grandson — and wasn’t sure how she was going to pay for it, after complications from surgery forced her out of her job.
“I’m just so thankful that he’s going to get it this year,” she told CNBC.
Everett is about 100 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
